On their way South from Canada, the Choss Boys stopped in Washington to sample the granite wonders around Leavenworth. Below are photos from three days of fun climbing in the craggy hillsides. Monday, September 5th, 2016: 'Outer Space'Snow Creek wall sits high in Icicle Creek Canyon, and is home to a concentration of multi-pitch gems. Outer Space is a 6 pitch 5.9 considered to be one of the best routes in the area. We hiked up during the late morning, and unsurprisingly found ourselves bush-whacking to the base of the route when we couldn't find the proper approach trail. Despite the unpleasant start, the climbing was superb. Tuesday, September 6th, 2016: Castle Rock craggingCastle Rock is a majestic roadside crag in Tumwater Canyon, South of Icicle Creek. Although not as tall as Snow Creek Wall, it offers brilliant rock quality, and a stunning view from the top. Over the course of a long afternoon, we climbed Canary (2 pitches, 5.8+), MF Overhang (1 pitch, 5.10c), and Damnation Crack (1 pitch, 5.9+). Wednesday, September 7th, 2016: 'The Warrior'Another Choss Boys special... We could clearly see the Warrior Wall from the road, yet somehow managed to stray from the proper approach. Unwilling to accept our error, we pressed on up the wrong gully until we were in a treacherous position. The 50-degree slope didn't have a single square inch of solid rock, it was 100% choss. So we were forced to rappel from a nearby tree until we could cautiously descend the rest of the gully by foot. We didn't let this misadventure spoil our day, and arrived at the base of the climb just as stoked as before. The Warrior is a gigantic single pitch 5.10d that ascends a crack in a massive corner.

Thank-you for taking me along on this climb. I am glad the Choss Boys enjoyed the climbing around Leavenworth. I'd never heard of the place before. It does look European.

A bit scary! Some kinds of rock are very dangerous. Caution is required at all times and even more so on certain types of terrain. The tree idea was creative!
